SPEECH SOUNDS

Articulation – how to produce clear and distinct sounds in speech. 

Phonology – the pattern in which sounds are put together to make words. 

Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia (DVD) – a rare speech sound disorder that impacts a child’s ability to plan and coordinate the facial muscle movements used to produce speech sounds or words with consistency.


EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE

How one uses verbal, written or alternative communication to express their wants and needs to those around them. 


RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE

How one understands language spoken to them through a verbal, written or alternative communicative capacity. 


ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION (AAC)

Also known as augmentative and alternative communication, alternative communication encompasses all of the ways that individuals might communicate with those around them other than using verbal communication. Some examples of aided AAC include tablets and communication boards. Some examples of un-aided AAC include eye contact and manual sign. 


SOCIAL SKILLS

One’s social/pragmatic skills include sharing thoughts and ideas through conversation, listening to the thoughts and ideas of others, sharing, turn taking and showing a general interest in your communication partner/s. Verbal and nonverbal communication are important tools for effective social communication and interactions. 


STUTTERING

A speech disorder that is characterised by repetitions of sounds, syllables, words, phrases and or sentences, prolongations, blocked periods of speech and extraneous body movements and/or behaviours. 


PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS

The ability to recognise and manipulate sounds for the purpose of reading, writing and spelling. 


READING

The ability to decode letter by sound to formulate words and sentences.


READING COMPREHENSION

The ability to read the content of a text and understand its meaning. 


SPELLING 

The ability to decode letter by sound to formulate written words and sentences.


WRITTEN EXPRESSION 

The ability to communicate ideas and thoughts in the form of writing.
